Alexandra’s Enchanted Garden: The Giants Garden

We can’t wait to see you,

the magic awaits,

there’s so much to discover,

behind the park gates

I made Giant props for a children's immersive enchanted garden walk taking place in the evening at Alexandra Park in Penarth. I worked on the giants garden creating a giant watering can, harvest basket, ginger beer bottle and book. The props were outside for 9 days so they had to be as waterproof as possible.

The Get In

The finished props at the van load and being positioned in the space. I worked in weather resistant materials like polystyrene and plasterzote and sealed any MDF or timber I was using. The ginger beer bottle was made by turning a block on a huge lathe. The main body of the watering can was made of mirrored acrylic and it’s extremities were painted to match. Almost all of the paint job across all the props was done with spray paint of paint mixed into latex. Latex was also used to cast the flower petals and the leaves. This ensured I got an accurate texture. This was a lot of work in a short amount of making time so I asked for some assistance. Some people did a lot of work, and some were there for a afternoon but all were very much appreciated.

Research Photography

To inform my choices for the contents of the harvest basket I went to Alexandra park and photographed the flowers in bloom at the time. It was late January so not many flowers were about. These photographs informed my choice of flowers and my colour scheme
