Swords and Daggers
Boudica Project - Weapons
Alongside the costume and the jewellery I made weapons for this warrior queen. The sword and dagger blades are cut from 3mm steel using an angle grinder. I then modelled up the hilts with clay that I fired then built on top of with modelling wax. I then made a silicon mold of each hilt in such a way that a blade can be dropped straight into it and clamped in place during the casting process. This allows the hilt to be cast directly onto the blade.
I cast my sword hilt in polyurethane resin mixed with bronze powder and added clear plastic gems painted to imitate red garnet. The dagger hilt was simply polyurethane resin which I covered with gold leaf.
I made leather scabbards for both weapons and then added latex detailing in patterns lifted directly from real Celtic weapons discovered by archaeologists.
